Innovative Assessment for Schools
Assessing Oracy
Assessing Oracy provides you with two nationally - standardised Comparative Judgement moderation assessments per year. Each assessment allows you to assess and moderate the oracy of 5 students from Years 4 to 9. We will provide you with a fun and relevant task that students will be asked to speak about for one minute.
Why are schools using us?
Community of practice
Oracy is understood differently by different schools and by different experts. That means that when people talk about oracy they could be talking about very different things! We don't try and define oracy; instead, we take a community of practice approach where your teachers as judges bring their own unique perspectives. Comparative Judgement combines everyone's views to produce a standardised assessment.
Fair and meaningful comparisons
We are asking schools to choose 5 pupils from across the ability range and then to measure their progress over successive years. By focusing on progress we believe you will have a meaningful measure that helps you compare the progress of the pupils in your school with pupils at other schools.
Research insights
Our project will develop the profession's understanding of what makes good oracy. We are working in collaboration with assessment experts at the University of Oxford to learn more about what teachers think makes good oracy.
Here’s a summary of how it works
  • There are two oracy assessments per year. View the full calendar here. You can choose which year group from Year 4-9 you would like to participate. You can assess 5 students in total.
  • We set the stimulus so that the conditions are the same for everyone . You'll read our prompt aloud to your students, they'll have time to discuss their thoughts informally, and then you can record their response.
  • You'll judge the recordings of students from other schools.
  • Once the national judging is complete, you'll get a nationally standardised results report for all your participating students.
  • You'll get full access to all the professional development resources on our Writing Hub website.
